"Black Hole Sun," Soundgarden

I was around 9 years old the first time I saw “Black Hole Sun” – and I thought it was the freakiest music video ever. The wide-eyed characters were in all sorts of bizarre scenarios (seriously, who barbeques who a Barbie doll?) and the music was all gloomy.  It definitely wasn’t The New Kids on the Block I was used to.

Rewatching “Black Hole Sun” now, my first impressions of the video seem rather silly.  It’s not freaky at all – just a very early 90s take on suburban life and alienation with terrible special effects.  (Seriously, the part where everyone gets suck up into the black hole sun looks like it’s straight out of a bad horror flick.)

Fortunately, the song has aged much better than the video and has become a classic from the early 1990s. Soundgarden would remain successful through the mid-1990s before their eventual breakup.   The group reunited last year and plans to release a new album in 2012.
