"Nothin' My Love Can't Fix," Joey Lawrence

For those who complain about how pop music just isn’t like it used to be …I’d like to remind you that our generation once made this popular:

“Nothin’ My Love Can’t Fix” was a one-hit wonder from Joey Lawrence, who became an instant teen idol in the early 90s thanks to his role on NBC’s Blossom.  Like many actors before him, Lawrence decided to try his hand at music and even had Teddy Riley (Blackstreet) produce his debut album.  But alas, not even Riley could save “Nothin’ My Love Can’t Fix” from being complete fromage.

The video plays like a primer in early 90s trends – complete with roller skating, grind dancing, and an obscene amount of torn denim. Lawrence can’t stop himself from hamming it up for the camera, often giving us literal interpretations of the ridiculous lyrics.  (Most awkward moment: Lawrence points to his crotch as he sings “lately, you’ve been acting like I smell like a zoo.”)  He also has problems keeping his (flannel) shirt on.  It might not seem like a big deal until you remember that Lawrence was 16 in this video – or, to put it in perspective, the same age Justin Bieber was when he became popular.  Yikes.

Some two decades later, Lawrence currently stars in the sitcom Melissa & Joey, but he recently hinted at a return to the recording studio.  We can only imagine how that’ll turn out.
