"Return of the Mack," Mark Morrison

“Return of the Mack” was one of those songs you couldn’t escape in the mid-90s.  (Believe me, I tried.) Most people had no idea who Mark Morrison was, but they sure knew who the Mack was. And the ultra-repetitive chorus – interspersed with “oh, my God!,” “top of the world!,” and “watch my flow!” –  let you know that no one was going to keep the Mack down.

Rewatching the video now, it’s clear that its premise is just as ridiculous as the song. We follow Morrison as he drives aimlessly around London, when – bam! – he sees his woman with another man.   Morrison walks around with his backup singers (as you do), mulling over her lies and preparing to perform in the upstairs club. And – wouldn’t you know it! – she appears again in the crowd, waiting to pull out her best Michelle Pfeiffer move (à la Dangerous Minds) and deliver an incredibly cheesy ultimatum.  “I want a real man!,” she cries, but of course the Mack is resistant to such pleas.  He gives her his best Dr. Evil glare and she walks out…leaving the Mack to plot his return.

Given the song’s theme, we shouldn’t have expected anything less.
